FAQ

What makes Little Sprouts diapers different?

Most mass-produced cloth diapers use synthetic materials like polyester and microfiber. While they work, we believe natural fibers (Hemp, Bamboo, and Organic Cotton) are superior for three main reasons:

Feature Natural Fibers (Little Sprouts) Synthetic Fibers (Other Brands)
Absorbency Holds more liquid and resists "compression leaks." Quick to absorb but prone to leaking under pressure.
Skin Health Breathable and less likely to cause heat rashes or irritation. Can trap heat and may cause sensitivities in some babies.
Sustainability Biodegradable fibers that don't shed microplastics in the wash. Made from petroleum products and shed plastic fibers.

Wash Routine

Washing cloth diapers can feel like a high-stakes science experiment at first, but I promise it becomes second nature—just like a load of towels, only with a bit more intention.

Everyone’s wash routine looks different. A great place to start is testing your waters soft/hardness. (Water test kits can be sold online or in stores) Once that is determined you will be able to know exactly how much detergent is needed. E.g.: Soft water does not require a lot of detergent as where hard water you will need more detergent.

A detergent with enough enzymes and surfactants is necessary in cleaning cloth diapers. Not all detergents are created equally. We use Tide free and gentle and it gets the job done. As much as I would love to use a "clean" detergent, unfortunately most plant based and clean detergents are not strong enough to clean human waste.

If your diapers start to smell "funky" after they get wet, it’s usually a sign of detergent/ammonia build up or a wash routine that needs a tweak—not a sign that the diapers are ruined. A quick "swish test" in a bowl of water can tell you if you're using too much detergent.

The New Diaper Ritual: Prepping

Unlike synthetics, natural fibers contain natural oils that actually repel liquid at first. They need to be "broken in" before they are ready for the front lines.

The First Wash: Wash your new diapers 1-2 times in hot water with a small amount of detergent.

The Result: Fibers are opening up and becoming thirsty!

Maximum Absorbency: Most natural fibers won't reach their "peak performance" until they’ve been washed multiple times.

All fabric is pre-washed before sewing so extensive prepping before first use is not necessary with Little Sprouts diapers

The "Big No-No's" (The Don’t List)

To keep your hand-sewn diapers in top shape, avoid these common pitfalls:

Fabric Softeners & Dryer Sheets: They coat the natural fibers in a waxy film, causing diapers to repel liquid instead of absorbing it.

Diaper Creams with Petroleum: Unless you use a liner, stay away from zinc or petroleum-based creams. They can cause repelling. Look for "cloth-safe" balms.

Aggressive Bleaching: While an occasional sanitize is okay, frequent bleaching will break down the natural fibers much faster.

And remember, cloth diapering doesn’t have to be all or nothing! And you don’t have to only use one style!

Why "Hand-Sewn" Matters

As a mom who has spent countless hours at the changing table, I know that a reliable diaper is everything. Every diaper I sew is a result of trial, error, and a passion for craftsmanship. When you buy from Little Sprouts Cloth Co., you aren't just getting a diaper—you’re getting a diaper that has been carefully inspected, reinforced, and "mom-tested" for the real world.

Little Sprouts Cloth Co. is compliant with all rules and regulations set by the CPSC. We are registered as a small batch manufacturer with the CPSC. If you have any questions, please reach out.
